West Common Update: New Seating Locations

14th September 2020 by longleysra 1 Comment

New seating was installed on West Common in late spring, which may come in handy for those of us who like to sit and enjoy the views whilst exploring the area. For those who haven’t already discovered them all, the bench locations are:

  • Victorian Pond – across the pond from the existing seating.
  • Long Leys Road – just to the right of the main entrance as you enter the Common.
  • Path across Common midway between Long Leys and West Parade. Ideal for a rest break when returning from the city centre.
  • At the highest and most easterly point on West Common, close to the Long Leys Road/Yarborough Road junction. This location gives great views over the whole of West Common and to the south of Lincoln.

See map and photographs below showing locations. The benches, along with recent improvements to fencing, gates and signage, were paid for from match day parking on South Common for Lincoln City home games. Decisions on spend are made by the city council following recommendations from the Commons Advisory Panel.

I have enjoyed walking over the common recently what lovely nice and polite people I met, have taken photographs, as my late father was in hospital at the St. George’s site in about 1945, just after the second world war with tb, I was interested to walk up there and saw the new cemetery which apparently backs onto Burton Road, of which I have walked through. Was interested in all this also as I work voluntarily at the Castle and and am holding a small poetry and book exhibition at Decimel house on Burton Road and was curious to see where the road led I also was born in Yarborough Road, in 1948 and ended up there on a walk from the Castle with a friend, believe it or not on my birthday in November just gone. I hope everyone enjoys reading this.
