Stop Veolia Legal & Campaign Fund Status

Last updated: 23 May 2018

Veolia withdrew their appeal on 18 January 2018 and the current threat to our community has gone. Due to Veolia’s unreasonable behaviour, by appealing and then withdrawing the appeal just before the scheduled Public Inquiry, we were awarded costs by the Planning Inspector.

This means the money we raised is still available for future community use. With the exception of £500, for LLRA operational expenses, the surplus will be held in an interest-bearing account as a legal defence fund until June 2019 at the earliest. When the threat from Veolia is judged to be remote a decision will be made on releasing some or all of the funds for community purposes in Long Leys and the wider Carholme Community. At the LLRA AGM on 22 May 2018 the community decided the StopVeolia legal fund will cease, with future responsibility for managing the community money handed over to LLRA. The community also thanked the three legal fund trustees, Richard Dale, Councillor Robert Parker and Gary Stimson who, as well as acting as trustees, had all played a key role in the campaign.

Fund Summary

We made £12,268.43 available to the legal fund from 269 fabulous donors from the Long Leys and West End communities against a revised target of £12,500. We beat our original minimum target of £10,000 to fund legal/technical experts for the Public Inquiry and on 4 January 2018, after a detailed review, concluded that it would be in the best interests of the community to plan to spend £12,500 on fighting the appeal. As a result, we asked for further contributions from those in the community who were able, to get us to the higher target. We had booked a barrister for the Public Inquiry beginning on 27 February 2018 at Bishop Grosseteste University. The booking was cancelled when Veolia withdrew from the appeal. Thank you to all who have contributed. We are proud of the fantastic community response in our fight against Veolia’s inappropriate development in our primarily residential neighbourhood.

We were up against a wealthy multinational, who no doubt outspent us hugely. What we had and Veolia didn’t was near universal support in the community. The effort of countless volunteers helped us to build a strong case with a (relatively) small amount of money.

Fund Details

  • The spend on the Stop Veolia legal & campaign fund was overseen by three trustees: Richard Dale, Councillor Robert Parker & Gary Stimson. Operational decisions were taken by Stop Veolia in collaboration with the LLRA.
  • As these funds came from our community, we seek to maintain as much transparency as possible on sources of funds and how they are spent.
  • The choice of whether a donation is displayed with a name or anonymously was the personal choice of each individual donor and can be amended if requested by emailing LLRA@long-leys.org.
  • Please also email us if you have any specific queries on the fund or how it is spent.
  • The fund summary is reported based on net income (after commission and processing costs from JustGiving donations) that will be banked in the LLRA bank account.
