‘West Common always looks good in May, with the buttercups in full bloom. The cuckoo flowers are more or less over, but the sorrel is coming into flower along with pignut. Migrant birds have returned with swallows nesting around the stables, house martins collecting mud to build their nests and swifts screaming overhead.’
