On the 11th July, Lincolnshire Police invited communities to take part in a County-Wide Speed Watch Day. The speed watch process is designed to educate and encourage people to drive within the speed limit. It is also an opportunity to report drivers using mobile phones or who are not wearing seatbelts.
In Long Leys, we have a children’s playground, a residential home and a hospital. Plus, Long Leys Road is a main route to school, with lots of young children, pedestrians, cyclists, and animals, including horses, using the narrow paths and roads.
Using the SID (Speed Indicator Device) to register vehicles speed, two LLRA committee members accompanied by 3 new volunteers carried out 2 x 1 hour sessions during the day.
A total of 64 vehicles were found to be exceeding the 30mph speed limit, travelling at 35mph or above, some as high as 41mph. Drivers exceeding the limit will receive an advisory letter from Lincolnshire Police. Should the same vehicle come to notice again, a second letter with a more direct message will be sent, followed by a visit by the Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Further speed watch sessions will be taking place regularly over the coming weeks. Take care, drive responsibly and keep your community safe.
If you have a couple of hours a month to spare and would like to volunteer to be part of the Speed Watch Team, then please contact Jackie Ward at jackie.ward@long-leys.org
